Archives of G. L. Watson & Co. Ltd and William Fife & Son.

The extreme nature of G. L. Watson’s design for the 1901 America’s Cup challenger Shamrock II is demonstrated in this longitudinal section prepared by the drawing office of her builders D & W Henderson.

Scottish Yachting Archives’ core collections are the design archives of G.L.Watson and William Fife, the country’s two pre-eminent yacht designers. The archive also holds material on other designers and yacht building yards as well as brokerage archives and extensive photographic collections. These are supplemented by an extensive library of yachting periodicals dating back to the mid-nineteenth century.

Enquiries are welcome and subject to conditions most items from the archive can be viewed and copies obtained. The archive regularly carries out commissioned research and assists with publishing projects.

Scottish Yachting Archives has an active collecting strategy consistent with its mission to preserve the archives of yacht design, construction and sailing in Scotland. As such we are always pleased to hear of relevant material.
